What's the point of wasps?

Image
Many times we had wondered why these tiny, annoying, stinging insect even exists. They don't produce anything like their relatives the honeybee. However, they have an extremely environmental role, as scientist says.   It important to say that the wasps, have differet social types, first of all, we have the egg-laying   queen, then the workers, and the ones that bother us are the "social" ones. Social wasps are predators, and control the numbers of potential pests, such as caterpillars and greenfly. They are estimated to consume abount 14 million kilograms of insects per year. They are very useful. Other vital environmental role is that wasps are valuable pollinators, they love sweet liquids mainly the nectar of flowers. This is the reason that why wasps buzz around our heads while we are having lunch in a summer afternoon. Many studies are being made to find out more details on how thet live , how common they are and how the environmental changes affect them. ...

15 year old got murdered by his facebook boyfriend

Now a days the social life of someone is entirely created on the internet in web pages like Facebook, Instagram, Tinder, etc. Making friendships without seeing the other person could be very dangerous, because it might turn out that your best friend "John who is 16 years old" real name is Jake and its 30 years old and he is also a bad guy. This happened to a 15 year old chilean girl who got her boyfriend from Facebook thinking that the "boy" was actually a boy. The girl was one day walking to school when a man starts following her and takes her to his house where its said that drugs were consumed by the two of them. Because of this the girl started having seizures ending at the hospital. This happened last tuesday and when she was at the hospital the doctors found out the man also had raped her and sexually abused her so now he is on a temporary prision. Last saturday the girl died at the hospital because of all of this. In my opinion its very dangerous to m...

CHILE PROTECTS PENGUINS

Image
Chilean government has rejected plans for a billion-dollar project because it would destroy sea life especially penguins.  Andes Iron a chilean industry had wanted to extract millions of tonnes of iron in the north of Coquimbo but m inisters said the project did not provide sufficient environmental guarantees. The penguins that would have possibly been endangered are the ones form Chile's Humboldt Penguin Reserve. Environment Minister Marcelo Mena said: "I firmly believe in development, but it cannot be at the cost of our environmental heritage or cause risk to health, or to unique ecological areas in the world." Recently a lot of mining companies had a hard time obtaining permits in Chile because of growing interest in the environment from politicians and public opinion. Personally I think it is very good that they do not allow many companies to settle in the north of Chile because it is an extremely important place for the environment. It also cont...

7 climbers fall to their deaths in the Alps

Seven lives were affected today in the Alps, the most extensive mountain range in Europe. The climbers were not all together, the accidents happened in two different parts of the Alps. In the Austrian Alps, 5 of the climbers, who are said to be German citizens, fell into a glacier near the town of Krimml. Approximately 300 meters as Dr. Egbert Ritter, a trauma surgeon at the AUVA hospital in Salzburg stated.  On the other side, in Italy we have a man and a woman who were climbing the Andamello glacier connected by three ropes in a group of 9 italians from the city of Brescia. The problem happened when some integrant slipped, which dragged down others higher up the slope. Apart from the man an the woman who did not survive, two climbers more were seriously injured.  I think we have to be extremely careful with this type of activities. Seven is a huge number of deaths in one day because of climbing the Alps. Even though you may have guides and a good equipment you are s...

Rafael Araneda, suffered a violent assault

Image
Rafael Araneda, suffered a violent assault Rafael Araneda, animator of the television channel "Chilevision", suffered a violent assault on the outskirts of his house. Arriving at his house, three cars were installed behind his vehicle, with 8 thieves inside. They got out of their respective cars and each one took their children and their lady, Marcela Vacarezza. They couldn´t enter their house, but they stole their cell phones and Rafael's car was stolen. luckyly the whole family came unscathed from this great scare. The animator referred to this event in this way: "It was a really violent, regrettable and forgetful situation, but it is part of what we have become accustomed to in recent years because there is zero control here for crime." This is one more case of a thief frustrated, every day we see different modes of crimes and enough is enough. There must be a change in justice in Chile, since it is unacceptable that we have to live in fear.

Barcelona Attack

The past August 17 in Barcelona, Spain a terrorist attack took place. A rented vehicle sped along the pedestrian area "Las Ramblas", a highly conquered and touristic place, killing 13 random people (kids among them), leaving more than 80 people severely injured. Witnesses said the van deliberately targeted people, weaving from side to side as it drove down the boulevard. One of the most shocking testimonies said that families screamed desperately  because of the amount of kids there were. Local police released a photo of a man whose documents were used to rent the van; Driss Oubakir, a Moroccan man in his 20's. Nevertheless, he says he is not involved in the attack, and that his documents were stolen. The day before the incident, August 16, an explosion occured at a house outside Barcelona, and left one person dead. Authorities say this was connected to the "Las Ramblas" attack. Spain's prime minister Mariano Rajoi Said it was a "Jihadist at...

Venezuela prison 'massacre' kills 37, governor says

At least 37 people in a southern Venezuela prison died Tuesday night after a massive fight broke out between inmates and security officials, a governor in the South American country said.  The violence started around midnight on Tuesday at the prison in Puerto Ayacucho, according to Gov. Liborio Guarulla of Amazonas state. Guarulla said security forces entered the grounds in an attempt to restore order in the prison, where the inmates had seized control several weeks ago."At midnight special forces showed up and through the night we heard gunfire and explosions," Guaralla said. The governor referred to the fighting as a "massacre" on Twitter. The bloodshed was believed to be the worst in Venezuela since a prison riot in 2013 that left 61 people dead. The office of Venezuela's chief prosecutor said on social media that 14 prison guards were injured in the fight, and that it was investigating the incident. Venezuela has around 30 prisons, many of w...

"Scientists discover 91 volcanoes below Antarctic ice sheet" Experts have identified 91 volcanoes hidden underneath the massive ice sheet covering west Antarctica, revealing one of the world's largest volcanic areas The project, by Edinburgh University researchers, has revealed almost 100 volcanoes, with the highest as tall as the Eiger, which stands at almost 4,000 meters in Switzerland. Geologists say this great area is likely to minimize that of east Africa’s volcanic ridge, currently rated the densest concentration of volcanoes in our planet. The activity of this range could have alarming consequences, scientist warned. “If one of these volcanoes were to erupt it could further destabilize west Antarctica’s ice sheets,” said Robert Bingham. “Anything that causes the melting of ice – which an eruption certainly would – is likely to speed up the flow of ice into the sea. The most important question is: how active are these volcanoes? “Th...

“Las Diablitas get to the final of the Pan Am Cup!”

Image
The semifinal was an exhausting game of tug-of-war between Chile and the local team, EEUU, in which the American players were surprisingly defeated with a 4-3 score, as the “Diablitas ” had never won an official game against them. The Americans fired first, scoring about 30 seconds after the game started, but the Chilean players did not distress and kept pushing on until they could equalize the game with Josefa Salas’ score, having 1:20 left in the first quarter. 20 minutes after the second quarter started, the Chilean player, Manuela Urroz, threw a shot between the keeper´s legs and score the second goal but 10 minutes later the “Diablitas” lost their advantage with a rebounded shot in a penalty corner, scored by Erin Matson.  Chile wanted to recover their advantage so, four minutes into the third quarter; Denise Krimerman ran into the right post and shot into the bow´s backboard. The game continued with the scoreboard in 3-2 winning Chile, but EEUU didn’t surren...

The South American Volleyball Tournament in Chile

Image
The South American Volleyball Tournament in Chile On August 7, the South American volleyball tournament in Chile began, in which great teams from the world played such as Argentina or Brazil. Chile in his first game won the selection of Peru 3-0 and then won the selection of Uruguay also 3-0. But the most difficult match was with Argentina, as the loser had to play the semifinal against the Olympic champion, Brazil. Sadly chile, playing a great match, lost to argentina 3-1 making his next rival brazil. That game was played today and Chile lost 3-0 and is playing tomorrow a match against Argentina to win the 3rd place. I am really surprised about how many people went to see the games or watched them online because volleyball is not a that famous sport and see it become famous is really good.

Plastic Waste

Image
A new study puts a number on the amount of plastic the planet has manufactured in the roughly 65 years we've been cranking it out: 9 billion tons. If you're struggling to visualize that weight, the BBC helps out: That's as heavy as 25,000 Empire State Buildings or 1 billion elephants. This study was made by the University of California. In 2014, 24% of plastic waste was incinerated and 18% recycled. But the long view isn't pretty: When looking at all plastics made through 2015, only 12% had been burned and 9% recycled, meaning 79% of plastic waste was left sitting in landfills or other locations (like in our oceans). The US recycling rate, meanwhile, is behind that of Europe (30%) and even China (25%). In the case of packaging, the "end of [plastics'] useful lifetimes" comes in less than a year; for building and construction, it's decades. Contamination has reached exaggerated limits and is growing in a way that does not have a brake. Wh...
